 For February 18
I've been concerned about the lack of active discussion in the course. After all this is a senior seminar and in some ways prepares you for engagement in your career or graduate school; a seminar is designed to share your insights about the course content and add your thoughts to the mix. (Please refer to the syllabus to see that participation counts for 15% of your grade.) Over this week I will be thinking about ways to remedy this and perhaps making some changes to the how the class works (for example assigning each of you to lead a discussion [maybe] or calling on individuals to speak or adding a presentation by you or create a blog). I also invite you to find other readings, visuals, media, or other material rhetorics to contribute to our work. We will talk about this during our next class.

For your journal: Consider what we have read and written about and created to date as well as the trip to the Maxwell Library Archives. What connections can you make among these activities? How does your engagement in one enhance your doing another? What can you connect directly back to the readings?

Something else, you might experiment with is neurographic art, a form used by psychologists to lessen anxiety and other emotions. Here is a tutorial. I think there are ways to use neurographic art to deepen thinking about what we are learning or working through a concept. It may be something you also want to try in your journal. You can write about a point in the reading and use this technique to focus on it.

MARCH 11 Spring Break. Enjoy and be safe. Take some time to write in your journals! A good time to do your museum visit!
 Museum Visit Assignment
Visit a museum or craft fair or art installation or some other exhibit (you could even ask Orson to go back to the archives to see a particular collection). Write a one-page response and bring it to class. Here are some suggestions to write about:
Where did you visit and what is this space known for?
What is the purpose or message of the exhibit?
What did you notice about the display (how many objects or what types of objects)?
How did the display relate to the audience?
How might you connect this display to any of the readings we have done?
