My friend Dave Daniel is an author from Lowell, MA. He has several novels and short stories, but has recently been authoring writing tips for an online magazine. His latest is on titles:

What titles do you have saved for a story or poem?

I usually don't come up with titles until after I've written something, but a few that I have saved for the future are:
"Fodder for Poetry"
"Love You to Death"
"Two Minutes"
"Hold it Down"

Typically I don't title things until after I've finished it but I do have a couple floating around that I'm trying to connect to the right piece. So far there are only two of them. They are "The Whisper Kids" and "Featherweight".

I usually think of titles at the most random times and jot them down on the notes app on my phone. A few I have are:
"I'll Be Freezing in Baltimore"
"The Blood in the Snow"
"Days on the Sheet"
"November Always Ends"

I have never thought to think of titles before a piece is even thought of, even though one of my favorite parts is coming up with a title. Though, if I had to for a few upcoming pieces I think they might be:
"Roses are Red"
"Translucent Thoughts"
"Wedged in the Back of My Drawer"

I have none saved. I usually make my title after I finish writing the piece. It sometimes takes awhile but I feel like I make a better title this way.

My titles often come to me prior to pen hitting paper. Although I do often change it depending on the how the paper evolves as I move forward with drafting the piece, the title is my favorite part of the writing process.

"What Comes Around"
"Step One"
"Just Wait for It"
"Begging the Answer"
"Some Damn Fooled Thing in the Middle East"
"Litty Nation"
"The First Comes Last"
"Imprisoning the Free World"
"A Global Force for Democracy"
"Global Warning"
"A Nation Divided"
"Facism and Injustice for All"
"Enter the Dragon"
"Keep Calm and Stay Ignorant"
"Blind Trust"
"Negligence, Ignorance, Allegiance"
"Nuclear Tirades"
"One Tweet at a Time"
"The Political Twittersphere"
"Political Sleight of Hand"
"Guardians of the Galaxy"
"Whose Lives Matter Anyway?"
"Cliché Titles"

I don't have any titles saved for future projects, but there's one story that I've written three or four different ways and have kept the title the same. It's called "The Collapse" and I'm finally figuring out just the way I want to structure it, so maybe this will be my summer project after graduation.

I do not have any titles that I have made up at the moment. Like Matt, I tend to wait until after I have completed a poem or story to title it, as I feel like the title will symbolize and represent the writing piece better that way. I find that I am also more creative if I make the title after I have finished writing whatever I am writing because I am proud of the work I created and am motivated to create a title that captures the essence of what I tried to get across to the reader and write about.
