The Practical Tutor --Written in 1997 by Emily Meyer and Louise Smith, this book has been used to help peer tutors work with college students on their writing particularly for first-year writing courses. The authors offer insights into academic writing--how it's taught and what expectations may be--and carefully construct scenarios to help writing tutors in different situations encountered in their sessions. Although the popular cultural references are dated, students in my Professional Writing Tutor class said these scenarios were helpful. At the end of each chapter, there are a variety of prompts and invitations for journal writing to help you consider ways to develop your tutoring skills. Below are several of the chapters from The Practical Tutor .
There are several journals that come out of writing centers. Some even have pieces written by tutors. Below are several pieces read in the Professional Writing Tutor class.
